Updating the Radiance 20XX (2020, 2021, 2022, 2041, 2042)
About the updates: The most current firmware upgrade for the
Radiance 20XX is shown at the top of the list below this section. You can
check your firmware revision by looking under "Info" on the menu or by
pressing "ok" on your remote when the menu is not up. The update can
be performed with a PC and a null-modem serial cable, such as the one
included with the unit. See the change log at the bottom
of this page for more details on the updates. All updates are complete and
contain everything from earlier updates so there is no issue with skipping
updates.
Running the update: (For more detailed instructions see the Tech
Tip on updating included in the zip file) Download the new update and unzip it. Connect
up your PC and your unit with a DB9-F to DB9-F null-modem serial cable.
Insure you have a stable power supply to the unit as there is a window of a
few seconds at the end when the flash is reprogrammed that if the power went
out it would then need to be reprogrammed at the factory--don't do it during
a lightning storm!
Turn the unit on. On the PC double-click (run) the downloaded utility.
Select the appropriate com port (check Device Manager/Ports) and baud rate
(57600 usually works well). Select the desired Update Method (Auto unless
you are attempting to reinstall the same firmware version and are having
problems) and click on "Start" when ready to begin. The utility will start
updating, which will take a few minutes. A download warning screen on your
display lets you know that the update is in progress.
The PC utility will finish and tell you when it’s done, and the Radiance20XX
will turn off. Turn the unit back on, acknowledge any on-screen completion
message, and you are ready to continue using the Radiance20XX.
If the utility finishes with an error (due to a communication error), just
turn the unit off and back on, and rerun the utility.
Note: All the configuration information is normally retained
during an update (unless otherwise noted in the update notes below) so you
usually won't have to write down your current settings or redo anything.

The newly added ZY550 rs232
command wasn't working too well and was fixed. The ZQI21 command
returned incorrect vres for 4K output modes. If you aren't using
these rs232 commands then you do not need to update.

"ZQI21". Adds rs232 command, "ZY550" to reset automatic aspect
detection which is useful if user temporarily overrides it and
then wants to redetect automatically. Adds "Full" option to
reporting mode changes via rs232 in menu under "Other: I/O
Setup: RS-232 Setup". Fixes output aspect per input aspect
problem with 2.40 input aspect using the 2.35 output aspect.
Adds improvements to automatic image based input aspect such
that detection is more reliable and also will unzoom to display
DVD setup menus, etc when they are detected. If you need

Preferable to perform this update at 28k to avoid problems.

Aspect Setup called Aspect Set which enables setting the
same input aspect across src resolutions for the current memory

control systems that know the source aspect but may set the
aspect before the source changes modes.

could give noise or no audio with some equipment. Added a
shorter option for audio mute length under Input: Audio Setup:
Mute Control. The default is "Long" but options include Short,
Medium, and Long. Previously, the options were only Short and
Long which have now become the Medium and Long values. Fixup of
a powerup issue that could cause no audio on an output recently
set to disable video. Several small menu improvements and
fixes. Fix for issue with CMS only reset. Small improvement in

Fixes the adjustable and reference test
pattern with mode commands. Added 2 APL patterns to the Gray
Window pattern group. Added a custom window size and a custom
window size + APL pattern to the User Color window pattern
group. The 2 new patterns added to the User group use the
RGB level that are settable in the first 3 patterns. The custom
sizing allows setting the window size in .1% steps. The custom
size + APL pattern allows setting both the window size and an
APL. As you vary the size of the window the background level is
adjusted to give the desired APL. If it can't meet the requested
APL, a greater-than or less-than sign is displayed next to APL
to indicate this (.ie setting RGB=240,240,240, the custom size
to 90.0% and the APL to 30% would give the greater-than sign
next to APL). Added rs232 access to the new patterns. The rs232
format for the new User size pattern is "ZY7TsSSSRRRGGGBBB" with
SSS being 3 digits (000-999) for 0-99.9% area of screen.
The rs232 format for the user defined size + APL pattern is
"ZY7TsSSSAAARRRGGGBBB" with AAA being 3 digits to be set to
000-100 for 0-100% APL.

Fixes issue causing slow or no
detection of hdmi sources using negative polarity (fairly
unusual). Several audio issues fixed. Update time ~15 minutes @57k

Fixes an audio issue which in some setups
could result in missing channels for multi-channel PCM. Fix for
audio only on output1 when using 4K video on output2. This could
result in a couple of problems--no audio from output 1 depending
on the AVR and occasional stutter on the output 2 used for video
if the AVR was having an issue.

Adds new 9x9x9
(729 point) gamut correction.
Previous 125 point calibrations are not modified unless you
choose to do so. You can optionally change from 125 point mode
to the new 729 point mode which will maintain your calibration
and interpolate the new points that could then be adjusted if
necessary. You can also still calibrate in 8 or 125 point mode
in the menu or with older calibration software as well. Look for
updates soon from SpectraCal,
Chromapure and
Light Illusion
supporting the new Radiance 9x9x9 CMS. Fixup for potentially not
detecting that 3D was discontinued by a source. A few fixes for

This update
modifies the configuration to accommodate the new 9x9x9 gamut.
Try the new update for a little bit before making config
changes and saving. Once you have performed a "Save"
configuration command with this update and you are using CMS
2-7 then going back to previous firmware and using CMS 2-7
will give incorrect colors. You could however perform an
"Undo", save that, and then go back, reload an old saved
configuration file, or do a factory reset to go back if you
perform a save with this new update..
The configuration utility was
updated to handle the 9x9x9 gamut data so download and use
config utility v1.6
after updating.

Fix for 4K 422/444 YCbCr output. Fixed up
4K every other line test patterns. Added 4K@25Hz modes and
1080p@25Hz. Fixed a video loss issue sometimes occurring with 3D
sources. Fixed screen tear issue occurring with 1080p60 sources
when used with 4K@30Hz output mode. Improvement to 4K
output scaling. Fixed 1080i output issue. Moved "Rate Match"
setting into the Styles menu so as not to force the use of a
Custom Mode in order to "Rate Match". (Tip: Rate Matching is
always performed if you're using an Auto output mode otherwise
you need to turn it on.)

2048 pixel width output mode. Bugfix for menu shortcuts "Menu
16", "Menu 17", "Menu 18". Added "Menu 19" menu shortcut for
Darbee. Fix for HBR audio displaying as 2 Channel. Adds ability
to program R/L arrow keys on remote rather than R arrow only
being dedicated to Darbee quick menu (setting is in menu under
Other: I/O Setup: Remote Ctl).
